Family Violence Statement
Domestic Family Violence (DFV) is a blight on our community and needs the fullest extent of support that we as a civilised society can provide.
DFV is a gendered form of violence, in that women are more likely to be victims than men. In saying this, my position is strongly that no form of DFV is acceptable, whether the victim is female or male.
The notion that “DFV is men’s violence against women”, whilst is largely the case, is clearly not limited to this definition. Research shows that DFV in same sex relationships occur at a similar rate to Heterosexual relationships. Research shows that men can be subject to DFV from women.
As a community, we need to call out DFV at the first sign and every time. This however creates the problem that is all too common. Those in need, significantly outstrip the financial resources of the organisations charged with supporting the victims.
I am proposing that, through the additional funds that will be available through the proper taxing of Mining and Corporations, that an additional $1 Billion per year, be allocated to addressing the impacts of and where possible preventing DFV.
From this additional $1 Billion per year, $250 million for emergency accommodation, $400 million for counselling and support services, $100 million for men’s behaviour support programs, $100 million to go to Child Mental Health Support, $75 million for domestic animal support (pets are often a forgotten victim of DFV) and $75 million for education programs.
We need to support Australians, particularly Australians that are vulnerable and doing it tough. We need an Australian Government that is willing to put the needs of Australians before the financial needs of their party.
Aston you have a choice! You can send the major parties a message that DFV matters, and we cannot sit back and say that it is acceptable that one woman dies every few days and one man dies every few weeks because of DFV. Vote 1 – Andrew Williams – then vote 2 for the party that you would prefer to govern Australia. That way, if I don’t end up in the top two candidates, then your vote will go to the candidate you prefer. It is your vote and your preference – not mine! The way it should be.
NOTE
I am currently undertaking my professional doctorate examining “Emergency management planning for Domestic Family Violence, before, during and after an emergency.” I am currently writing my dissertation and hope to finish the course this year.
