Taxation

by | Mar 22, 2025 | About me

Taxation is a topic that the major parties do not want to talk about, unless they are giving you a tax cut.  Taxation is however a topic that we need on the political agenda.

The amount of tax paid by mining companies and corporations is disproportionately charged compared to the tax that each of us pay.

We pay money on our income, we pay GST, we pay company taxes.  My question is that why is it that we pay every day, but the following is the facts on tax in Australia.

Australian nurses pay more tax that the mining sector pay in resource taxes.

Australian teachers pay almost double the taxes than the top mining companies pay in resource taxes.

Australian tradies pay more tax than the top mining companies pay in resources taxes.

The argument for the current system, besides the fact that the mining companies and their lobby groups contribute big dollars to the major parties in donations, is that they create employment, and these employees are paying income tax.  This is correct, but I am still at a loss with this argument, why the burden is on the Australian worker to pay whilst they are making hundreds of billions of dollars profit.

My solution

Mining taxes

I am proposing that Australia implement a resource taxing system similar to Norway.  Whilst there a lot of figures floating around, implementing a mining tax similar to Norway would see an additional $450 billion into Government which could fund all of my proposals and so much more.

Our governments celebrate returning a surplus budget.  This is so wrong, as Australians, we should expect government will limit spending to what we can afford.

Taxpayer funded fossil fuel support

In 2023-24, Australian government spent $14.5 billion on supporting fossil fuel companies.  These companies are not struggling.  Their CEO’s and executives are on more money that the Prime Minister.  They pay huge dividends to their owners often billionaires and investors who are often foreign investors our taxpayer dollars going overseas.

I would immediately end these subsidies.  This money could fund increasing bulk billing and free TAFE and University.

Corporations

Again, our corporations avoid paying their fair share of taxes in Australia.  This is avoided because they have to pay parent companies etc. and that is all tax deductible.  This needs to stop.  I propose that they are charged at the company tax rate as are all small and medium businesses and that the ability to shift their Australian profits offshore only occurs after they have paid tax on their money.

It is interesting to note that we must have Superannuation.  Our income tax is on the gross amount of money we earn, then the superannuation comes out of our pay.  If this is the standard that government imposes on us, this is the standard that must be imposed on corporations.
